visual posts: materials - sensation
Working with materials means constantly sensing, observing, and reflecting materials and their properties. Through and during the working process feelings for and of the materials and their properties develope and are reflected, to finally evolve in new ideas, new research projects and/or new art work.
Here I share with you some of my visual notes, which manifest the interrelation of sensing materials and reflecting materials as essential part of my working process.

September 2013
September 2013: I harvested some leaves of the birch tree in our garden in Biel and produced a nice pale yellow lake pigment based on Al3+ dye complexes on a clay mineral substrates.
September 2013, Canada golden-rod (Solidago canadensis) is flowering in Biel/Bienne.
I harvested some canadian golden-rod on the Omega terrain at Biel-Gurzelen. Next year the new headquarters of Swatch and Omega in Biel, Switzerland designed by Shigeru Ban will be constructed exactly here.

I harvested some Canadian golden-rod on the Omega terrain at Biel-Gurzelen, and hoped to dry it in the garden, but unfortunately I had to finish the drying in my apartment. I had to support the concentrated smell of the plants for some days. Never again!

... artists' materials research exactly has its excellence in the conduction of non-reproducible experiments and studies, to also explore topics such as the uniqueness of a material...
... to my opinion, the advantage of researching in the context of art is, that artists' research methods can include all scientific research methods, whereas science has to exclude certain artists' research methods...
I added some personal statements and comments related to "ARTISTS' MATERIALS RESEARCH", as there seems too much confusion about the term "ART MATERIALS RESEARCH", especially in respect to SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH" and ARTISTS' RESEARCH" methods and topics.

July 4, 2013:
"Alkanna tinctoria" is flowering now in my garden in Biel/Bienne. I'm still not totally sure, if the plant I did purchase is the "right" Alkanna tinctoria, as I have seen several quite different looking "Alkanna tinctoria" plants in different gardens. |

Chenopodium giganteum; Goosefoot (en), Magenta Spreen (en); Riesengänsefuss (d)
Very ornamental & gigantic looking - and it tastes like spinach!
It grows quite fast, especially in my tomato house, and occupies a great part of the tomato house now.... which was not intended :-) |

November 2012
I had the chance to visit the depot of the "Museum der Kulturen" in Basel while researching on indigo. They have an impressive collection of African and Asian textiles and related products, such as seeds or plant materials collected years ago in Africa.
... made me think, that probably there are quite some seeds of rare plant species in the drawers of ethnological museums and collections. Would they still germinate?
Here some photographic impressions of the textile collection:
